By giving to the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer Fund a Need this year, you can help us acquire an autostainer for the Comparative Pathology Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR), and an Incucyte SX5 for the Gene Editing Shared Resource (GESR).

CPDISR helps scientists study human diseases by using animal models and human tissue. They take tissue samples, preserve them, process them into wax and put them on glass microscope slides. An autostainer machine then stains these tissue samples so that pathologists can see them clearly under a microscope. CPDISR’s current autostainer is 14 years old and is used constantly, producing over 35,000 regular slides and 1,400 special stain slides every year. A new, advanced autostainer will help produce more and better-quality slides for researchers.

GESR helps scientists use DNA-based techniques to study different types of cells and other models. The Incucyte SX5 is an analysis instrument that will allow researchers to observe how cancer cells grow, spread and react to treatments, and to understand how certain genes drive cancer. By keeping an eye on live cells without disturbing them, the Incucyte SX5 offers insights that traditional methods can't provide. It also makes experiments quicker, more accurate and easier to repeat, which will help scientists discover better ways to treat or prevent cancer.
